How to Get Your Shopify Store Recommended by ChatGPT

Last updated July 2026

ChatGPT recommends stores it can physically read, retrieve through Bing, and verify through third-party sources, and since March 2026 it also pulls Shopify product data natively through Agentic Storefronts. Being listed is now the baseline. Being recommended is earned, and the eight steps below cover it, with the evidence behind each. New to the topic? Start with our guide to Generative Engine Optimization.

How does ChatGPT actually recommend stores?

Two systems run side by side. The first is the shopping surface: product cards powered by feeds, where Shopify Catalog and Agentic Storefronts supply your product data and OpenAI ranks merchants on availability, price, quality and whether you are the maker or primary seller. The second is conversational recommendations: when a shopper asks for the best products in a category, ChatGPT writes an answer grounded in Bing retrieval, trained knowledge and third-party sources, and decides which brands to name. Most guides only cover one system. You need both.

What are the eight steps to get recommended by ChatGPT?

1. Confirm your Agentic Storefront is on

Shopify's ChatGPT channel is active by default for eligible stores. Per Shopify's documentation, your store must sell to customers in the United States (the store itself can be based anywhere), your products must be eligible for Shopify Catalog, and your Terms of service, Privacy policy and Return policy pages must be completed in Settings. Check the status under Sales channels, Agentic, in your Shopify admin. There are no fees, and checkout happens in your own store checkout.

2. Make your store readable without JavaScript

OpenAI's crawlers do not execute JavaScript. An analysis of over 500 million crawler fetches found no evidence of JavaScript execution by GPTBot. Standard Liquid themes pass, but page builder sections, client-side review widgets and headless builds commonly hide content from AI. Test it: view the page source on a product page and search for your description text.

3. Allow the right OpenAI crawlers

OpenAI runs separate bots: GPTBot collects training data, OAI-SearchBot powers retrieval for answers, and ChatGPT-User fetches pages live for users. You can block training and still be recommended, but blocking the retrieval and user-fetch bots removes you from answers. Check your robots.txt and any bot protection or firewall rules, which often block AI crawlers by default.

4. Get indexed and ranked on Bing

Roughly 87 percent of ChatGPT citations match Bing top 10 results, which makes Bing the index that decides your conversational visibility. Set up Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and fix anything it flags. Almost no Shopify merchant does this, which makes it one of the cheapest advantages available.

5. Ship complete, query-matching product data

The shopping surface ranks on product data quality. Fill in barcodes (GTINs), category, variants and materials, keep prices and stock identical between your pages and any feeds, and write product titles that match how shoppers actually ask: a title like The Luna tells an AI nothing, organic cotton sleep mask does. OpenAI's feed specification also lists optional fields that can enhance ranking, including aggregated review statistics and FAQs.

6. Put reviews where ChatGPT can see them

ChatGPT shopping reads product pages live and weighs reviews, but many review apps inject them with JavaScript, which AI never sees. Make sure review content renders in the page HTML and that your Product schema carries AggregateRating, so both the live fetches and the Bing index pick your social proof up.

7. Earn third-party mentions, especially listicles

ChatGPT leans harder on trained knowledge than any other engine, which makes external evidence of your brand the strongest long-term factor here. Brand mentions across the web correlate with AI citations about three times more strongly than backlinks, and ranked listicles are the single most cited content format. Pitch the category roundups in your niche, get onto review platforms, and build genuine community presence. Keep it organic: manufactured mentions are explicitly warned against and add nothing.

8. Measure what ChatGPT actually says

Ask ChatGPT the real questions your shoppers ask and note who gets named. Mentions are near binary and stable, so a handful of checks reveals exactly where you stand, and tracking them over time shows whether the work above is landing. GEO Rise automates this loop for Shopify stores, from a per-product readiness score to scheduled answer tracking across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude, or start with our free 2-minute GEO audit.

What does not get you recommended by ChatGPT?

Honesty saves you money here. There is no published evidence that llms.txt files drive citations, so no llms.txt app will do this job alone. Keyword stuffing and most dedicated conversational SEO tricks tested poorly in follow-up research, with several actively reducing citation rank. And you cannot pay for placement: OpenAI's product recommendations are unsponsored, which means every position is earned through the steps above.

How long does it take?

The technical steps are binary: crawler access, readability, Bing indexation and product data take effect as pages are recrawled, typically weeks. Third-party presence, the strongest factor, compounds over months. The encouraging part: brand mentions in AI answers are stable, so once you flip from ignored to recommended, you tend to stay there.

Frequently asked questions

My store is outside the US, can ChatGPT still recommend me?

Yes, with a distinction. The Shopify shopping surface currently requires that your store sells to customers in the United States, though the store can be based anywhere. Conversational recommendations, grounded in Bing and the open web, are global, so the readability, indexation and mention steps pay off in every market.

Do I need to install a ChatGPT app on Shopify?

No. The integration is a native sales channel powered by Shopify Catalog, active by default for eligible stores. You manage it under Sales channels, Agentic, in your Shopify admin.

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI documents that product recommendations are unsponsored and ranked on availability, price, quality and whether you are the maker or primary seller. Visibility is earned, not bought.

Does llms.txt help with ChatGPT?

There is no published evidence that it does. Studies across hundreds of thousands of domains found no correlation between llms.txt and citation frequency. Treat it as cheap hygiene and spend your effort on the eight steps above.
